Insomnia

Sleep is SO important! We all need a solid 7 to 9 hours of sleep every day to function properly and be at our best.

But unfortunately, not everyone gets the sleep they need on a nightly basis. Many people have a very hard time sleeping and suffer with insomnia.

Insomnia is a sleep disorder where people have trouble falling asleep and/or staying asleep.  It affects as many as 35% of adults.  It can be an acute or a chronic problem.  Acute insomnia lasts for a day up to a few weeks.  Chronic insomnia is diagnosed if insomnia happens at least 3 times a week for at least 3 month or more.

Insomnia takes it toll on a person’s health, inside and outside.  It can affect the body with bags and dark circles under the eyes, lowered immune function, forgetfulness, cloudy thinking, increased irritability, anxiety, muscle pain or fatigue and can have an impact on daytime sleepiness that can lead to a higher accident risk, along with other negative health effects.

Common causes of insomnia include stress, irregular sleep schedules, anxiety, adrenal issues, Yin deficiency, physical illnesses, pain, medications, diet, neurological problems, or specific sleep disorders. It can also be a combination of several things contributing or exacerbating the insomnia.

We love using acupuncture and herbs as our main tools to help people get a good night’s sleep and restore proper sleep habits.  It is essential to get to the root of the issue as to why someone isn’t sleeping in the first place and acupuncture can be wonderful. It can help restore balance in the body and mind. Many people enjoy more restful sleep with acupuncture and herbs, plus they get a nice nap on the table as an extra bonus.
