What is Herbal Therapy?

Chinese herbs have served as a foundation for Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for over 5,000 years.  The fundamental idea of living in harmony with nature and the environment forms the basis for the use of Chinese herbs as well as the traditional Chinese approach to health.

Herbs can be used as foods and as medicines. TCM offers an advanced system of time-tested herbal formulas with thousands of years of success.   Some of the herbal formulas used today date back as early as 150AD.  Most often, herbs that nourish and strengthen the body are combined with herbs to address the specific disharmony. This is based on ancient wisdom, that a strong, healthy body is resilient; able to resist most disease or pathogens. Thus, it is said that Chinese herbal medicine treats both the Root of the condition as well as its symptoms.  This is essential for effective, long lasting results.

Chinese herbal medicine encompasses hundreds of medicinal substances, primarily plants, but also some minerals and animal products—classified by their perceived action in the body. Different parts of plants such as the leaves, roots, stems, flowers, and seeds are used. Usually, herbs are combined in formulas and given as teas, capsules, tinctures, or powders.

Chinese herbs are now experiencing a rapid increase in usage and popularity. Health-conscious consumers are concerned about the concentration of synthetic chemicals in western diets, medicines, and the general environment. Chinese herbs are being welcomed by more and more people as they are seeking more natural, healthy and balanced alternative remedies to our 21st century health issues.
