Facial Taping
What is Facial Taping?
Facial taping has been around for a very long time, gaining popularity in the late 1800’s. The application techniques have certainly evolved, and the materials have improved over the years, but the concept is the same.
Facial Taping is the strategic taping of the face to keep muscles from moving and to ‘retrain’ the facial muscles over time. The taping can keep the skin smooth and prevent the repetitive muscle movements, which we all make while we sleep.
A dynamic wrinkle is formed over time with repetitive movements. We each have our own unique pattern of expression; these expressions can lead to specific problematic areas on the face. We make these expressions daily, but we also make them in our sleep as we dream. Facial Taping can help to alleviate the extra 8 hours of muscle movements every day which can help keep the skin smooth, support the underlying tissue and retrain the fascia and muscles.
Dynamic wrinkles (wrinkles that appear when there is a facial movement) respond the best to Facial Taping. However, some Static Wrinkles (wrinkles that are seen without facial movement) can also get mild improvement and slow down the advancement of the wrinkle with Facial Taping.
Many people are very familiar with Body Taping for pain and injuries and have seen people at the gym, sporting events, rehab or their doctor’s office wearing it, it works great. Facial Taping uses the same concepts, but it is much more gentle on the area being taped. You can NOT use the same tape on the face as you use on the body, Facial Taping uses a very specific tape.
The mechanism behind Facial Taping is that it works by lifting the epidermis of the skin (ever so slightly) and allows blood and lymph to flow more freely. This can improve circulation and reduce inflammation. It also allows for small incremental changes to be made to the fascia as the muscle is stationary under the tape, which leads to a new muscle memory. Increasing blood and lymph to the area is always a plus since it will bring needed nutrients and remove excess toxins. Typically, Facial Taping requires 30 days to see results and then maintenance of a few times a week is needed.
This is a super easy and safe at-home therapy that we love to recommend to our clients between visits and we use it as an adjunct at-home therapy to our Signature Rejuvenating Facial Treatment. So, plan to get some Facial Taping homework if you are seeing us for a Facial Series.
There are 2 distinctly different taping applications when doing Facial Taping. The application chosen will depend on what each specific person needs.
