Body Cupping

The art of cupping has been used for over 2500 years in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is exciting to see more and more people rediscovering this fabulous and noninvasive therapy. Maybe you have seen people at your gym or at the Olympics with strange looking red circles on their back or shoulders … that is the mark of being cupped.

There are many types of cupping currently used: dry cupping, wet cupping, fire cupping and moving cupping. At Striving for Health, we only use the dry cupping and moving cupping method. Cupping is a great option to reduce pain and muscle stiffness and increase mobility in certain areas of the body. It also boosts circulation and can help to reduce the appearance of cellulite, which is a nice added bonus.

Cupping works by using different types and sizes of cups to create a suction on specific areas of the body. The suction pulls the skin and blood vessels into the cup, which brings more nutrient and oxygen rich blood to the specific area. This can help to improve circulation, move stagnation, nourish tissues, reduce inflammation, pain and muscle spasms, support overall relaxation and loosens up tight muscles or joints.

Body Cupping  can leave marks that range from light pink to dark red to deep purple, depending on how much stagnation is present in the area.  These marks can be round cup size marks or longer marks (from moving cupping) on the skin that can stay visible for several days.

So, if you are going to be doing anything that requires showing skin from the area that has been cupped, you will have marks so be aware of this when scheduling in for an appointment.

Cupping is usually done in conjunction with an acupuncture treatment and will be included in any acupuncture sessions when required.

However, if you want to try Body Cupping but don’t want the needles, we can do that to. We offer Body Cupping with acupressure and LED light therapy as a stand alone session.

Did you know:

“Cupping helps jumpstart the body’s natural healing process by increasing blood flow within the treatment area.

This has the effect of speeding up the healing process and soothing sore joints and muscles.”

- Dr. Houman Danesh, a pain management specialist at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York
