Striving For Health has been successfully performing acupuncture and holistic therapies for almost 10 years in Northern Virginia — but what exactly is acupuncture?

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an effective and safe natural therapy that originated in China over 3000 years ago, and it is used to treat a wide variety of different symptoms and conditions. The practice of acupuncture is based on the theory of meridians, which are energy pathways that run along the human body, each linking to specific organ systems. Acupuncture stimulates the body’s own healing systems by stimulating certain points on the skin called acupoints. Acupuncture is just one branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It has a proven track record of safety and has been used by millions of people to successfully treat a wide variety of symptoms and conditions. Acupuncture is widely used in clinics and hospitals throughout the US, Asia and every other country on the globe. Acupuncture promotes proper circulation, managing the body’s immune system, and balancing organ functions.

The World Health Organization as well as countless other organizations have done research on acupuncture and its many benefits. It’s stated by the US National Library of Medicine that more than 10 million acupuncture treatments are administered annually in the United States alone. It’s popularity is believed to be linked to its effectiveness for pain relief and scientific studies continue to prove its efficacy. The Journal of American Medical Association released a study in 2017 that concluded “Acupuncture is effective for the treatment of chronic pain and is therefore a reasonable referral option.”

What is Gua Sha?

Gua sha is another technique that has been used for centuries by practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Gua sha utilizes smooth flat tools to scrape areas of the skin in order to engage the deeper layers and stimulate blood circulation. Gua sha helps to break up stagnation below the skin, increase circulation, decrease pain, improve range of movement, move the lymph and help with sore muscles. Gua sha is also used by many for its anti-aging benefits to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Striving For Health has been performing Gua sha treatments in Herndon, Virginia for years.

What are Ear Seeds and why are they used?

Auricular acupuncture is the stimulation of acupuncture points on the external ear in order to treat and address a variety of conditions and symptoms in other areas of the body. The entire body is represented on the ear through these points, making it an effective treatment option. Ears seeds are a way to stimulate these acupoints (acupuncture points) for therapeutic benefits. Ear seeds are completely painless and are very small so they don’t get in the way of everyday activities. The “ear seeds” used can be small stainless steel balls, gold balls, actual seeds or even fancy swarovski crystals. Ear seeds are attached after an acupuncture treatment with an adhesive backing and will stay in place for 3 -4 days until they naturally fall off. Ear seeds are used to strengthen and solidify the benefit of any acupuncture treatment by continually stimulating the systems that were addressed during treatment. Auricular Acupuncture has been used by many to help with lower back pain, insomnia, and pain tolerance, just to name a few. There is an entire field within the acupuncture world that is strictly devoted to auricular acupuncture, where it is used exclusively for addictions, trauma, and pain.

Diet & Herbal Recommendations

After an acupuncture treatment, a licensed acupuncturist from Striving For Health will be able to assist with diet or herbal recommendations and answer any questions that you may have about your specific needs. A good diet is the foundation of health so dietary therapy is something we always like to address. An herbal and dietary consultation can be done by itself in a separate consultation session or as part of an acupuncture treatment.

Chinese dietary therapy is drastically different than Western dietary principles in the sense that Traditional Chinese Medicine has a very different approach. Traditional Chinese Medicine follows a holistic concept of balance that relies on food recommendations in order to address certain issues. It is true that the foods we eat can help, hinder, or play some effect in the our overall health. Bad eating habits can lead to increased symptoms. In ancient times foods were chosen and prepared for the healing qualities that they would impart. The first documentation of Chinese dietary therapy was found in 300BC and has been continually practiced and improved upon since.
