How does CBD work?

CBD, as well as all other phytocannabinoids, is utilized through our natural Endocannabinoid System (ECS).    The ECS is found in mammals, birds, reptiles, and earthworms…it is what maintains homeostasis within all our bodies.

Our body naturally makes cannabinoids that maintain the homeostasis in the body, these are called endocannabinoids.  CBD is a type of cannabinoid that is called a phytocannabinoid, meaning it is a type of cannabinoid from a plant, but it can be used by our own ECS to increase our body’s ability to maintain balance.

Like vitamins and other medicines that are used to support and strengthen the naturally produced compounds created by our bodies, naturally produced cannabinoids from plants (phytocannabinoids) also support how the body functions.

CBD impacts our body by working with our ECS through our CB1 and CB2 receptors, stimulating these receptors while also blocking key enzymes (FAAH & MAGL) from breaking down our own endocannabinoids, thus increasing our naturally produced cannabinoids.  Anandamide and 2-AG are both naturally occurring cannabinoids that we produce in our bodies. (See our Endocannabinoid page for more info on this system.)
